Where we are

The Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi is on Portella Mountain's ridge at an elevation of 2388 m (7834 feet).

It takes only a mild 40 minutes hike to reach it from Campo Imperatore (AQ) in the heart of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, under the shelter of Corno Grande and all the principal summits of the mountain. It is also possible to join our refuge from Prati di Tivo (TE) after a gorgeous 4 hours traverse.

Directions

To get to Campo Imperatore use the highway A24 Roma-L’Aquila-Teramo and take exit no. 14 for Assergi. Follow directions to the cableway (Base della Funivia del Gran Sasso d’Italia) and keep going on the route SS17 bis.

To reach the altitude of 2130 m (6988 feet), where Campo Imperatore Hotel is located (next to a summit station of the ski resort) you can drive for just a mile after the highway exit and park in Fonte Cerreto where the cableway is available. During the winter time the cableway is the only possible access to the western side of the plateau. The main automobile itinerary follows the route SS17 bis but it’s kept closed for snow during the whole winter time.

Prati di Tivo can be reached from the highway A24 Roma L’Aquila-Teramo taking the exit 15 for San Gabriele Colledara. Then continue on the route SP491 to Montorio and follow directions to Prati di Tivo from there.

For those who use the Highway A14 Bologna-Bari the best exit is Teramo-Giulianova. Then follow the freeway to Teramo Ovest and follow directions to Montorio (route SS80) and from there to Prati di Tivo (route SP43).
